I had a photograph selected for another juried show — The 35th Annual Juried Photography show at the Mill Pond House in St. James, the Smithtown Arts Council Gallery. The theme of the show is HOME, and along with entries artists were asked to submit a statement about their work. As my work tends to be observational as opposed to introspective, I approach the theme of home from the viewpoint of the outside looking in. I am also finding that 90% of my current photos have been taken with my iPhone camera and Moment lens. I am changing as a photographer, I think in a good way, with my lack of dependence on high-end equipment.

Memory Window — this is the piece that was accepted in the show. It will be printed as a 12″ x 17″ image in a 18″ x 24″ frame.

Home represents a place where memories seem to dwell. The images I present do not depict my own home and memories, rather they are images that tug at my heartstrings. They tell silent, evocative stories of lingering memories that I am compelled to capture with my camera. The photo titled Memory Window is part of a series of images of an abandoned adobe building in a rural, southern Texas town.

While images of home can be nothing but memories, there is also an immediacy of home being a place in the here and now. For people who have been given the moniker “homeless,” the physical space of home can change from day to day, or even hour to hour. The two photos of homeless individuals are part of an ongoing series of images captured in New York City. Interestingly, in both instances I originally planned to present the images in black and white, but I decided that the subjects retain their individuality and uniqueness in the prism of color.

The photographs for both series were taken with my iPhone 6 camera. The iPhone camera is with me at all times, ready to capture images whenever they catch my eye, and is unobtrusive when walking the city streets or riding my bicycle through small towns. The final execution for both series will be my creation of handmade books.

I submitted three images to the juror. These two were not chosen for the show.
