The accidental Snowbird…

Categories Wildlife0 Comments

During the late summer and early fall our motor home was in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, for repairs. On October 28, when we went to pick it up, a large spider was living in the driver’s side mirror.

The spider (we call it a he, although we we have no way of knowing the sex) wove a large web, and did not seem to be bothered when we took the RV for a test drive.

As it turned out, the repairs were not all completed, and we had to leave the RV in New Jersey. We went back to get it on Wednesday, November 10, and we drove it home to get  ready for our annual trip to Florida. We forgot about the spider until Friday, when Eddie was washing the RV. There he was on the mirror, which we guess he considers home.

We left New York on Sunday, November 14, and drove back to New Jersey to take care of a few more mechanical problems (not a good year for our Country Coach RV). The Spider made the trip back to New Jersey and continued to hang out on the mirror. On Thursday we left for Florida, and everytime we stopped, we checked on “Spidey,” who was cocooned on the mirror during the whole trip. We arrived in Florida late Friday afternoon, and since then he seems to have settled in, spinning a large web and, we assume, catching his share of southern food.

We only have one spider living on the RV, but he casts a large reflection in the mirror.

We can only wonder if “Spidey” plans to settle in Florida, or if he has aspiration of being a Snowbird and returning back north in the spring.
