April 9 – Commisioned in the mid-nineteenth century and decommissioned just after WW II, this army base has had a memorable history. In the 1970’s it was sold to developers and is now a gated community with several diverse communities, including a campground and golf course.
Interesting tidbit, several movies have been filmed here, and during the filming of The Alamo (filmed about 10 miles out of town) John Wayne stayed in one of the original officers houses on the base.
